Top Tips On Buying Your Wooden Floors
When you are looking to purchase new wood floors for your home, it's easy to get a little overwhelmed. With so many options, and so much to consider, it's hard knowing where to start. Many people jump into buying their wood floors without the proper thought, or planning, which can make the process much more difficult then it needs to be.
Here are a few tips on how to plan for, and buy, your new wood floors:
- Know what rooms you want to furnish. You should take some time to decide what rooms you do, and don't, want to have wood floors, and keep in mind that each room you do install wood floors in will need maintenance to keep it looking beautiful, and new. It's this reason that causes many people to only place wood floors in some areas, and leave other carpeted, or tiled.
- Know what style of wood floors you are looking to install. You will want to be specific, for instance you will want to decide on what species of wood you think would look best, and what kind of finish you will want, before you begin buying. You also need to know whether you want thin strip flooring, wide plank flooring, or parquet flooring, which can be placed in geometric designs, in order to customize the overall look of your floors.
- Figure out if you want to use a prefinished, or an unfinished plank. The difference between to two is just what it sounds like: one has already been glossed and finished, ready to be laid, and the other has not, and will need to be finished on the site of the job. If you are inexperienced with matters like installing floors, you will want to go with a prefinished plank design, as it minimizes the job that must be done, and creates less of a mess. If you know what you are doing, and want a completely customized experience, then you should go with the unfinished.
- Decide if you are fit for the job. There is a big difference between simple do-it-yourself home improvement, and a project of this magnitude. If you have never done something like this before, you will be better off hiring a professional to do it for you. While this may seem like the more expensive option, the cost if you mess up is much higher, as not only will most materials probably have to be bought once more, but you will end up having to hire someone to fix the damage anyway.
- Finally, be realistic about the amount of time and effort this project will require. A job using a finished plank design, without the customization of a parquet flooring style, will take around a day to complete. A unfinished plank design, or anything especially complex, will take longer, sometimes as much as a week. If you are new, and unfamiliar with wood flooring, then take any time given, and double it.
